Introduction to the World

I believe that everyone has songs that they loved when they were younger but can’t seem to remember the name of the songs until they hear it again. For me, one of those songs is “It’s Not Over” by Daughtry. “Daughtry” might be a familiar name to you if you used to watch American Idol. Vocalist, Chris Daughtry, participated in American Idol and finished in fourth place. Even though he didn’t win the competition, he went on to be the most recognized participant. After American Idol, he formed a band with four other musicians some of which are no longer in the band. To ensure the band was recognized, they decided to ride that popularity wave and name themselves “Daughtry” after their lead vocalist.

Breaking Out

Daughtry took the world by storm with their breakout single “It’s Not Over”. This song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit top three on several other charts. The song begins immediately with Chris Daughtry flexing his electric voice over guitar cords in the background. Before the chorus, it seems he’s singing about how he’s dealing with a breakup with,

“I was blown away
What could I say?
It all seemed to make sense
You’ve taken away everything
And I can’t deal with that
I try to see the good in life
But good things in life are hard to find”

Daughtry takes it up a notch vocally for the chorus with all the instruments synchronizing in the background. He’s trying to plead his case with the woman saying that if they try again, he’ll do right by her. For the rest of the song, he’s doubling down on his attempt at rekindling the romance with the woman.

My Thoughts

I try to give each genre a chance you know. I don’t usually listen to Rock, but this song is an ABSOLUTE banger! Daughtry does a great job at setting the tone in the beginning of the song. It builds up to the climax really well and has an electric feel to it. This is a true rock song in my opinion.
