“Odd Look”-Kavinsky ft. TheWeeknd Song Review
Intro
Kavinsky, a French DJ known for his retro electronic style, has a style of dark, synth-heavy sounds with intense storytelling. His music often feels like it’s for an action film. The collaboration with The Weeknd on “Odd Look” brings a unique mix of Kavinsky’s signature electronic style and The Weeknd’s moody vocals. After reviewing “Sidewalks,” it’s interesting to see The Weeknd take on a different sound that still captures his signature style.
Song Review
“Odd Look” kicks off with Kavinsky’s classic synth-driven beat, immediately setting a tense, futuristic tone. The deep, pulsing bassline creates a sense of urgency. The production feels like a throwback to 80s synthwave but with a modern twist. Kavinsky is known for creating an atmospheric feel in his songs.
The Weeknd’s vocals slide in smoothly, matching the intensity of the instrumental. He sings about being in control and not backing down, almost as if he’s daring someone to test him. Lines like, “Your hesitation speaks to me, Louder than million words per minute”. The lyrics hint at the idea of trust and suspicion, which gives the song an edgy feel.
As the song progresses, The Weeknd’s voice rises and falls with the beat, blending in perfectly with the dark. The lyrics give off this feeling of someone wrestling with their inner demons witht the way he delivers the lyrics. You can hear the force in his pronunciation and how hes using a lot of air to sing each lyric. When the chorus comes in, the beat drops and all you hear is the Michael Jackson reminiscing from The Weeknds vocals with how high his pitch reaches. Unlike the soulful guitar riffs in “Sidewalks,” this track leans heavily into the electronic production while still capturing the classic Weeknd style.
Final Thoughts
I am surprised this song is recognized as much as it currently is considering its a very good track. “Odd Look” is a perfect example of how well The Weeknd can adapt to different sounds. This track brings out a darker, tougher side of him that we don’t see as much in his pop hits. The blend of Kavinsky’s retro, synth-heavy production with The Weeknd’s smooth, almost haunting vocals makes it a standout. If you’re into songs that feel like they belong in a gritty, neon-lit movie scene, this is definitely worth a listen. Kavinsky’s production, paired with The Weeknd’s energy, makes “Odd Look” one of those tracks that gets better with every play.
My score: 9.3/10
