“Instant Crush”-Daft Punk ft. Julian Casablancas Song Review
Intro
Daft Punk is one of the most unique, electronic, and timeless artists of all time. They’re a French duo capable of creating sounds like no other, sounds that you never knew you’d love. If you have never heard of them, you have most likely seen them before with their iconic helmets. They gained popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s, making them one of the most influential artists of dance music.
Song Review
Instant Crush was one of those songs I used to skip a lot mostly because of the intro. When I was younger, I never enjoyed very long intros. This song has a slow but steady intro where it keeps building. As I grew older and gave this song a try, I never understood how I could have disliked it. The intro is one of the best parts of this song only because it makes you fall in love with the beat. Julian Casablancas is introduced with a soft voice talking about a past relationship stating “I didn’t want to be the one to forget, I thought of everything I’d never regret, A little time with you is all that I get”. It’s a nice buildup lyrically and musically to the chorus. He remembers memories of his lover saying things to him in the pre-chorus “I listened to your problems, now listen to mine”.
The chorus adds a more groovy and faster sound with the 80s synths modified to Daft Punks’ futuristic sound. He starts by saying “And we will never be alone again” signifying how they will never be alone as a couple together although they are now separated. This line recaps the song’s theme of reminiscing love memories that you’ll never get back.
The second verse goes back to the slower beat from before, where here he starts to add meaning to the tracks album “Random Access Memories”. He talks about how at random points in life, you recall the lost partner even when your not actively thinking about them.
One of the things I really appreciate about Instant Crush is how Daft Punk mixes an old-school vibe with a fresh sound. The beat has a steady pulse that pulls you in, but there’s also this feeling of sadness running through the music. The way Julian Casablancas’ voice is altered to sound robotic adds to that, making it feel distant. Even with the vocal effects, there’s still a lot of feeling in his voice, especially when he says, “I didn’t want to be the one to forget”. The blend of sounds is also interesting. There’s a guitar riff that comes in and out, giving the song a bit of a rock feel. The mix of electronic beats and guitar makes the song feel like it’s stuck somewhere between past and present, which fits the theme of lost connection perfectly.
Final Thoughts
Instant Crush is a song that creates an experience. Its one those songs you can appreciate more by listening to it with headphones. It captures that feeling of wanting something but never really having it, which is something almost everyone can relate to. The production is polished which helps create the story. Every time I listen, I notice something new, whether it’s a small sound in the background or a certain way Casablancas sings a line.
My score: 9/10
